There are a million reasons people jumped on this that are not evident in the list of cars. It is easy to brand someone a moron just because you like the car that was traded in. You probably have a mental imagine of something that isn't representative of the car traded in. Sure, there were some idiots who might have sold their car for more than $4500 in the open market, but I bet a lot of these were crappy and had other issues making their repair not worth the effort. I know 1 person who did this and traded in a beat down dodge van for a new nissan versa sedan. In the end, he got rid of his dogged van with no trade-in negotiations (no cleaning/no money spent on repairs) and ended up with a new car with a warranty for under $10K out the door with a pretty low monthly commitment. That is an offer difficult to resist for many.
